Central Focus:
This 4 week Integrated Thematic Unit is designed to combine the disciplines of English and Mathematics. Students will read the popular novel The Hunger Games. Students will explore the issues of social justice as depicted in The Hunger Games and participate is survival simulations and a mock reaping. They will research census data to generate their own dictatorships while exploring the issues of power and resource management as it relates society and government.
Students will then create their own dictatorship being free to structure their dictatorship as they choose. The intent is to provoke discussions regarding the powerful, how they maintain their power, and what it takes for citizens to rebel.
